Tech Focus – Online Learning Communities

On pages 33 and 34 of their book, Boss and Krauss talk about the value of online learning communities as ways to make connections, share resources, and model the technologies that we want to use with students.  Today, we’re going to spend some time exploring various online learning communities.  One that they mention is Classroom 2.0, a community on Ning.  Here’s a post I’ve written there asking for recommendations of online learning communities that might be of value to you, dear CyberCampers.  Below are a couple more that I think are very, very valuable.  It’s impossible to compile a complete list – but I learn in these places.

EdTechTalk – A fine group of webcasters, teachers, learners and interested others who get together regularly to discuss all sorts of things related to education and technology.  While there are an awful lot of excellent shows on the network, I particularly recommend EdTechWeekly and Teachers Teaching Teachers – but all are in my podcast aggregator and I listen and participate as I can.You should try to catch a show live – complete with chat room backchanneling.  Quite a learning experience.

Teacher Librarian Ning – A community of Teacher Librarians.  I know that several CyberCampers are already members of this community.

Build Your Own – This isn’t a specific place, but more a way of thinking and learning.  I use my Google Reader and Twitter accounts to build a collection of the people, blogs, and other content that I learn from regularly.  Here’s an example of what your aggregator or reader might look like – it’s a collection of educational blogs.

In the comments for this post, talk a little bit about what you notice in these different communities, as well as share any online learning communities that you think are valuable.

    Bud,

First of all: good job on cybercamp! I prefer to attend virtually, as I have about 5 other projects going on right now. Nonetheless, this is pretty cool.

Okay, to my point. I believe that for the first time my biggest challenge is not to find resources, but to periodically go through my collection of links and get rid of the junk. Otherwise there’s too much stuff out there and I find myself missing some great info just because it’s somewhere in there with all the rest of the info….

    Or something like that. :-)

    Richard
